Active Adults want useful and unique living spaces in their home. No longer needing bedrooms for growing children, they see opportunities and ideas for how to use space like no other. An increasingly common trend among downsizing homebuyers is room for a home office.
According to a US Census report released in 2009, approximately 68 percent of American households have computers connected to the internet. From business to school, to paying bills and chatting with friends; the internet weaves in and out of life from every direction. With increasing reliance on computers and the internet, more and more time is spent in the home office. No longer a cramped desk built into the edge of the kitchen, the home office demands prime space in the floor plan.
According to Gopal Ahluwalia, an economist at the National Association of Home Builders, 12 million houses nationwide have dedicated home office space. In 2006, Entrepreneur Magazine noted that many Baby Boomers will forgo traditional retirement and instead start a business. Today that trend continues and the home office is becoming a necessary space.
Many of the floor plans offered by Windsong Properties feature the home office is a key element. At Somerset in Woodstock, the home office shown in the current model is directly across from the windows of the open courtyard. Natural light and private greenspace provide a pleasant view from the desk. In the Dallas community of Windsong at Seven Hills, The Stratton plan offers a unique position for a home office – the ‘casita’ or little house. Separated from the main living space by a breezeway, yet still under the primary roof structure, the casita is the ultimate in home office space. With a view to the sunny courtyard and a private bath, the casita is a self contained home office.
Creating useful and unique spaces such as a dedicated home office speaks to the needs and desires of the Active Adult buyer. Whether they are working, retired, or somewhere in between, filling this need makes a new home in an Active Adult Community that much more exciting.
